Making And Caring For My Kokedama’s

I am excited to share some more information about the wonderful way my Kokedamas are travelling and how my skills have changed over the years. I have been making Kokedama for a few years now. It is an art that I have enjoyed. My most successful creation is the Snake plant or ‘mother-in-law’s tongue. They are resilient and robust and capable of surviving in a dry environment – both indoors and out. These are complicated plant with special roots systems that in some way make it easier to make these special moss balls but sometimes much harder.

When these plants grow bigger so do the way you build them as the size of the moss ball is justified by the root structure you wish to keep. With these developments not only do my skills get better and this whole process gets less daunting, but I change and develop new and cool ways to build my own special kokedamas which are different. I try different materials, strings and processes to find new results or better results.

While I test my new ideas and skills, mistakes are made but that makes me want to fix them more or change my creative process to suit what is happening.

With kokedamas you think not just into the present but how is the plant going to grow into the future. With this in mind you look into your past results to see if anything can work. This process becomes more and more used the more complicated or large the plants get or whether they are indoor or outdoor plants. Snake plants though are very durable plants that need little attention and can live indoors or outdoors.

The Perfect Plant Set Up

When choosing your plants for this great plant expression take time to choose the right plant as you have to feel good doing it. These plants and the creation are about expressing you and if you are not feeling it, then you cannot express yourself properly. Also each plant you can change just a bit if you want from as easy as a different coloured string to being crazy and making an odd shape.

Everything can be redone in this artform, So do not worry about making a mistake as you can just start again if it does not work out but you may find you will make something special. This special achievement comes as a shock but also something that you like to care about more.

My Kokedamas

The plants have been thriving and they have grown shoots pushing through the soil around them. Visually the look appealing and healthy and beautiful .

Snake Plants are known to have a number of health benefits like filtering indoor air, removing toxic pollutants, and boosting mental health. I have placed a plant in each of my bedrooms.

These plants are low maintenance and need some indirect sunlight to thrive. They needs soaking every couple of weeks,  I do spray mist them when it is very hot and humid.

Well, you might say what is a Kokedama?

A Kokedama is a traditional Japanese form of art gardening. Koke means moss and dama means ball. Creating a Kokedama consists of taking wet soil and wrapping the plant roots firmly into a ball squeezing out the excess water. The next step is to cover the ball completely with sphagnum. Using string wrap around the ball several times to keep the sphagnum in place.

Kokedamas make a special clever ecosystem that develops over time to survive similar to like a bonsai plant.

This ball can then be displayed in a bowl or can be suspended in the air with a piece of string.

Give it a go – it’s not  too difficult. Gardening is a great hobby as it is creative, relaxing and a delight to see how these plants progress.
