My Knitting Journey & The Lessons Learned From My First Project
When embarking on a new skill or hobby, we often find ourselves starting from scratch—knowing nothing and gradually building our knowledge base. Learning something new as an adult can be both exhilarating and frustrating. I decided to delve into the world of knitting again after many years. Little did I know that this seemingly simple craft would prove to be quite the adventure agaion.
My First Visit To The Knitting Shop
I stepped into the cozy knitting shop. The patient women there guided me through the basic steps of knitting as i have not knitted for many years. They offered patiene and encouragement. After spending literal hours absorbing their wisdom, I left the shop with a desperate hope that I could continue knitting on my own.
Back home, I diligently practiced the steps I’d learned and it was harder than it looks. I knitted for hours, fearing that if I stopped, I’d forget everything and I did. I dropped stitches unknowingly and added extras where they didn’t belong. But I persisted, excited to create something uniquely mine and it is unique.
My First Project
what a stitch up!!!After several weeks of work, I had a knitted piece roughly 22 inches by 14 inches. However, the stitch pattern was the same on both sides (now I know this as “garter stitch”). Go Me! It felt a bit lackluster. One end was inexplicably wider than the other, and my material had noticeable holes and strage stitches everywhere. This was far from the glorious garment I’d envisioned but it was mine.
Adding An Embellishment Or Border
I do not know where to start or finish on my odd-shaped, stitched, pattern thing. It is uneven and hard to work out how to border.
Lessons Learned By This
Patience Pays Off: Knitting isn’t an instant gratification hobby. It requires persistence and patience.
Mistakes Are Part of the Journey: Dropping stitches and adding extras are normal. Embrace them as learning opportunities.
Creativity Knows No Bounds: Embellishments can turn a basic project into something extraordinary.
Conclusion
So, if you’re considering knitting, remember that it’s more than just yarn and needles—it’s a journey of discovery, creativity, and resilience. And yes, it’s harder than it looks, but the rewards are worth every stitch.
